The iPhone is the first step by Apple in the world of cellular phones. An iPhone is a multimedia cum cellular phone which combines the functionality of a cellular phone, an iPod and an internet web application device. The iPhone is one of the most amazing cellular phones to have been launched and it works only with AT&T network. This has disappointed a lot of mobile users and led people to come up with iPhone unlocking. Ever since iPhone was first launched, Apple has taken very strict measures against iPhone unlocking. But in spite of considerable roadblocks, iPhone unlockers are winning.

The iPhones comes with a SIM lock. People have been trying to unlock iPhones ever since they were first launched and many have actually succeeded in doing so. Each of the three times AT&T and Apple came up with their figures of iPhone, a considerable gap has been found between the number of iPhones sold by Apple and number of them being activated by AT&T. In fact, it is believed that about a quarter of iPhone sold by Apple in the United States are not activated by AT&T. Technically an iPhone is so designed that it doesn’t allow the access to the media player or other web features until not activated by the formal carrier. But the iPhone unlockers have succeeded in bypassing this technical requirement.

Cost effectiveness is the main logic behind people unlocking their iPhones. Since the iPhones are SIM locked to work only on the AT&T network, the user cannot change the SIM. This is a disadvantage to a user who happens to travel abroad regularly on business trips and hence has to pay extra charges to the AT&T network for making calls with his iPhones. Instead the user can unlock his iPhone and change its SIM on a business trip and take advantage of the local call rates. Also some users prefer using the T-Mobile cellular network over AT&T.

Apple has been trying pretty hard to dissuade customers for getting their iPhones unlocked. They have been cautioning customers on the fact that unlocked iPhones are not covered under the warranty policies. Apple has recently updated software in the iPhones which acts like a virus and turns the iPhone into “bricks” on trying to wreck function of 3rd party applications. In spite of trying so hard, Apple hasn’t been able to stop people from unlocking their iPhones.
